“Little Serendipity Pond”

Trailhead: Moffat Tunnel East Portal
Distance: 6.1 mi
Elevation Change: 1,423' Leaving the trailhead, the trail skirts the tunnel entrance then parallels South Boulder Creek. After about a mile take a right turn on the Forest Lakes trail. The trail climbs steadily to a bridge over Arapaho Creek. About a mile after crossing Arapaho Creek, the trail crosses a small stream. Follow this stream to its source, an unnamed pond I've called "Little Serendipity Pond".

Neva Lakes

Trailhead: Fourth of July
Distance: 3.7 mi
Elevation Change: 1699' Follow the trail to the Fourth of July, then head west on a poorly defined trail. I crossed the creek after about 0.4 miles, but the lakes can be reached by paralleling the creek on either side.

Mirror Lake and Crater Lake

Trailhead: Monarch Lake
Distance: 3.7 mi
Elevation Change: 1996' From Monarch Lake, hike 1.5 miles to the Crater Lake trail junction. Bear left and go 1.7 miles to the junction with the Buchanan Pass trail. Bear right and continue 3 miles to the junction with Pawnee Pass. Follow the trail to the right. A series of quick switchbacks deposits you at Mirror Lake. Follow the trail another quarter mile to Crater Lake.

Gourd Lake

Trailhead: Monarch Lake
Distance: 4.0 mi
Elevation Change: 2463' From Monarch Lake, hike 1.5 miles to the Crater Lake trail junction. Bear left and go 1.7 miles to the junction with the Buchanan Pass trail. Bear left again and continue 2.2 miles to the junction with the Gourd Lake spur trail. Go left. Climb about 1250' on a series of switchbacks. After passing a small pond, continue to Gourd Lake.

Wheeler Lakes

Trailhead: Gore Range
Distance: 6.7 mi
Elevation Change: 1,397' The trailhead is a "Scenic Area" parking lot on I-70, near Copper Mountain. The trail runs along I-70 for a while before heading uphill. About 3 miles from the parking lot there is a trail junction. Bear right to reach Wheeler Lakes. The first lake is the upper lake.

Distance: 7.3 mi
Elevation Change: 1,640' Follow the North Inlet trail about 6.7 miles through a broad valley featuring a meandering stream and the occasional pond. Immediately after crossing Ptarmigan creek, find the faint trail that ascends the slope beside the stream.
