The trailhead is a "Scenic Area" parking lot on I-70, near Copper Mountain. The trail runs along I-70 for a while before heading uphill. About 3 miles from the parking lot there is a trail junction. Bear right to reach Wheeler Lakes. The first lake is the upper lake.
