Fern Lake and the trail to it have been ravished by wildfires in recent years, first by the Fern Lake fire in 2012 and again in 2020 by the East Troublesome Fire.

| Route Description | From the trailhead, hike 1.7 miles (2.7 km) to the Pool. At the trail junction, bear right. The trail climbs through the Fern Lake Fire burn scar, passing Fern Falls. Fern Lake is another 1.1 miles (1.8 km) up the trail. |
