A brilliant number from the Go2 era of XTC, "Are You Receiving Me?" shows how Andy Partridge so quickly got his reputation as some kind of twisted pop genius -- it's delightful, funny and so giddy that it almost seems like it couldn't survive in a cold world. Starting with a stuttering riff backed by Barry Andrews' carnival keyboard, the song immediately launches into its instantly perfect chorus, Partridge delivering the title with a delicious whine and then following it up with the line "Or are you deceiving me right now?" The verses in many ways just kill time between the repetition of that brilliant moment, but it gives the band a chance to slow up a bit, Colin Moulding getting in a brief but warm bassline while Partridge's romantic paranoia suddenly ratchets up even higher. The midsong break puts in everything from a suddenly distorted vocal to a fun guitar break before slamming right back into one more triumphant run through the chorus -- pure pop thrills in three minutes. -- Ned Raggett (allmusic.com)
