From the CGT Diaries:

Wednesday 29th September 2004

Paul:
The show last night at the Port O Call was an interesting one. We had a good-sized audience of nearly 300. CGT played a 1-hour set before bluegrass legends Peter Rowan and Tony Rice. Some of my fears of playing in clubs in Salt Lake were confirmed, the audience was a bit chatty and unfocused. There was a good portion of the audience that was really listening, which helped to counterbalance the noisy ones. But I felt I had to go into a sort of "survival mode" just to play my best and make it through the set. There were several moments in the Toccata and Fugue that felt like we were hanging by a very thin tread, ready to snap. My wife said that from the audience point of view, it was a strong performance with good energy. It is amazing how different the perspective can be from the stage. On the positive side, there were lots of my friends and family in attendance, and I could feel their support.

Bert:
last night we played at Port O' Call near downtown Salt Lake. It was a challenging gig; the audience was talking loudly throughout the set. It took a big effort to stay together because the energy in the room was dispersed.

Fortunately there was a lot of Paul's family and CGT friends present and their support helped the performance a lot. Prelude Circulation and Train to Lamy seemed to draw the audience in closer; I think they picked up on the quiet parts and the subtlety of the circulation - there is a lot of power to that. After our set Tom Griesgraber played a short "transition set" - sounded great but it seemed to get lost into the brawl. Toni Rice and Peter Rowen were the headliners. Toni Rice is a living legend; he played with the 'greats': Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, ...I went up to the front rows, closed my eyes, listened to his beautiful playing, and soaked in his presence and experience.
