Notes
from Paul's diary...04/13/2000
6:32am. We have just driven down Lake Shore Drive past downtown Chicago. The sun is just rising over lake Michigan. I got to bed about 2am last night, but was so buzzed from the show I didn't get to sleep until after 3am. Tony told me that he was up after 3am posting his diary. So we are all running on about 2-3 hours of sleep. We are on our way to Detroit to do a live radio show on WDET at 1:45pm.
The show last night at Martyr's was completely sold out. I don't think that even one more person could squeeze into the club. There were a few tables up front next to the stage, but most the audience stood throughout the entire show. I knew we were in for a good show when I heard the audience going wild during Richard Leo Johnson's opening set. At 10pm, Tony and the CGT hit the stage. We had to go through the audience to get on stage, a club security person had to clear our way through the packed house. Wow! Another great show! Very wild audience, perhaps a bit too wild in some of the quieter moments of the show, but lots of fun none the less. There were a few moments that approached silence during some of our quieter passages, but the rowdy crowd prevailed! One of the highlights of the show was the debut of the Murray Vishnu and his Orchestra piece. Before we played it, I told the story from Tony's book "Beyond the Bass Clef" about Murray Vishnu and his Orchestra, but more on that later. When I hit the screaming slide guitar part the whole audience went completely crazy. We are still struggling a little with the poly-rhythmical section at the end of the piece, but it the piece is on it's way.
Another great moment during the show was Bohemian Rhapsody. When we began playing I could hear quite a few people wanting to sing and then I motioned to the audience to join in... Incredible! A chorus of 400 singing along at full volume. Tony and Richard could hear what was happening up in the dressing room and rushed down to check it out. Tony has put a 10 second mpeg file of the sing along on his road diary on the papabear.com site.
Richard Johnson joined us for our acoustic encore. We usually like to go out into the audience for this, but there was no room at all anywhere in the house, so we just went to the front of the stage, unplugged and played.
After the show, the merchandise table was totally swarmed by CD and T-shirt buyers, and again Stephen handled the situation well. All five of us (CGT, T-Lev, RJL) signed CDs for about an hour afterwards. Tony was particularly busy, because he had not only the new CDs to sign, many people brought along all their Peter Gabriel and King Crimson records.
