On Jazz Up Late: Mike Nock's 'Suite SIMA' in concert, celebrating a fruitful 30 year collaboration with the Sydney Improvised Music Association.
Mike Nock, this year’s recipient of Australia’s prestigious Don Banks Award, celebrated an inspiring and fruitful 30 years of collaboration with the Sydney Improvised Music Association with a concert performance of his tone poem 'Suite SIMA' at The Sound Lounge in the Seymour Centre in Sydney after accepting the award on February 1st.
For the occasion Mike’s ensemble featured SIMA veterans, trombonist James Greening and trumpeter Phil Slater, with saxophonists Peter Farrar, Jeremy Rose and Karl Laskowski, bassist Brett Hirst and drummer James Waples. The concert was recorded for Jazz Up Late and it’s our main feature this week.

"SUITE SIMA is a musical tribute to the Sydney Improvised Music Association, for their long ongoing contribution to Sydney’s creative jazz community. Many outstanding careers have been nurtured through their support and much great music has been created and heard under their auspices, played by top Australian or visiting artists. The musicians on this recording have an extensive history of playing for SIMA with James Greening and Phil Slater often heard there as bandleaders. To all who have shared the journey thus far, I hope this recording rekindles fond memories and shows why SIMA continues to be so important to Australia’s creative music scene.
