Notes
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For was the second single released from U2's breakthrough 1987 album The Joshua Tree. The song was deeply inspired by American gospel music. According to the Edge (from U2.com): "We were listening to some gospel during The Joshua Tree sessions. I remember the Mighty Clouds and the Rev. Cleveland and the Staple Singers...." Supposedly the album version was very different from the first attempt, when the song was called "Under the Weather": "The original was more loose, almost Jamaican. At first no one (in the band) took it that seriously because it sounded so unlike anything we'd ever done and it didn't jell until the mix, but when it was finished we all realized that we had something special. The reviewers didn't like it though. One American said...that Foreigner's song "I Want to Know What Love Is" was better." The Jamaican influence was never lost from U2's gospel song, as Bono has added snippets of Bob Marley's "Exodus" and "Three Little Birds" live in concert. U2.com claims that "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is the band's second most covered song (after "With or Without You" Famous versions include ones by Cher, Seal and Steve Winwood, Vertical Horizon, and Venice. The 7" vinyl version was released worldwide and contains the title track (album version) and two B-sides from the infamous Joshua Tree "Double Album," "Spanish Eyes" and "Deep in the Heart." Both songs are excellent and make this single a great addition. The I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For single has been released on CD. This song was U2's second straight number one on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, but peaked at only number six on the U.K. singles chart. It was nominated for two Grammys as Best Single of the Year and Best Record of the Year. -- JT Griffith (allmusic.com)
