Notes
Pegged as a supergroup with talents coming from bands like Yes, King Crimson, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Asia exploded into the '80s with "Heat of the Moment," a balanced throttle of guitar and drums which gained momentum as the song progressed. John Wetton's convincing vocals glide over the gritty guitar lines of Steve Howe, which open up the song's first five seconds of pure power pop glory. While the keyboards aren't as streamlined, as on "Only Time Will Tell," the album's second single, Geoff Downes can still be heard filling in behind the chorus' full-force gale. Asia reformed longtime prog rockers into radio-savvy chart-toppers, and their music still included some of their former progressive rock pomposity, which fans took kindly to. Written by both Wetton and Downes, "Heat of the Moment" remained on the charts for 12 weeks in 1982, climbing as high as number four, but stalling at a measly number 46 in Britain. The album itself hit number one in the U.S., which led to a world tour that filled arenas in nearly every city they played. "Heat of the Moment"'s slick feel and channeled grandiose shared the charts with songs like Toto's "Rosanna" and Human League's "Don't You Want Me," which represented the early part of the decade's light fluff and new wave's superficialness. The song's polished bombast isn't exactly rock-heavy, but the fusion of guitar, drums, and synthesizer make it a well-rounded radio tune. -- Mike DeGagne (allmusic.com)
