By the time that the Police released Ghost In The Machine, it was no longer a surprise to hear them touching on political themes, or dealing with more serious issues than dating a prostitute or having an affair with a student. Opening Ghost, and acting as a political bookend with “Invisible Sun” around “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” “Spirits” is an upbeat keyboard driven reggae tune – don’t fret the guitars are still there, but they mimic the keyboard chord changes, which takes away the more angular sounds of singles past – with a rolling bass and Stewart Copeland’s highly technical yet understated drumming that is a stab at political machinations and corruption. One of the big highlights of not just Ghost In The Machine but of their entire career, “Spirits In The Material World” is the Police entering their next phase. -- Chris True (allmusic.com)
