On this four-song EP, Midnight Oil tried some musical variations after two albums of hard rock. "Let's rock," declared Peter Garrett at the outset of "No Time for Games" (a lament for the loss of childhood in the modern world), but the music in fact was restrained, and the group tried acoustic instruments and a moody instrumental for an intriguing change of pace from their usual style. (Originally released in November 1980 in Australia on Powderworks Records, Bird Noises was re-released in 1990 in the U.S. on Columbia Records as Columbia 46136.) -- William Ruhlmann (allmusic.com)
