One of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' most accessible songs, "Don't Do Me Like That" provided the band with a much-needed Top Ten hit on 1980. A simple rock/soul four-chord pattern guides the verses as well as the choruses -- miraculously -- without being repetitious. A fabulous, Stax-inspired bridge then sends the song through the roof, setting the stage for Benmont Tench's powerful organ solo. Lyrically, the complications of romance and deception are told in Petty's astute, direct, and earthy style. -- Matthew Greenwald (allmusic.com)
