-------------------------------------------------------------
This is an unusual book. The author was a correspondent for the New York Times. This means he was both a capable writer and had access to his subject. The text in the book is not straight reportage, although there is some of that. The words are sometimes dramatic, which is natural given the dramatic people and events described. That sort of writing isn't exactly rare, isn't what makes this book unusual.
What I find unusual is that the writer is also a good photographer. He won't go down in history as one of the great motorsports photographers, but his pictures do an excellent job of telling a story. They're black and white, not pretending to be art, but much more (I think) than journalistic. The photos capture tension, fatigue, elation, motion, relief.
This book is a must-read for fans of classic Formula 1. |
