Notes/Review |
This third volume of Atkinson's WW II series follows the pattern of the earlier two - focusing on US ground operations, only including naval and air force contributions where absolutely necessary. The scope of the book is greater than the earlier two tomes and thus the small unit descriptions have evolved into large unit descriptions. Still, Atkinson peppers the text with the words and reactions of individual soldiers.
In my review of the second book, I speculated that this one would include events in Italy after the fall of Rome (which occurred the day before the Normandy landings). These events are given short shrift and are covered in a scant few pages. There is somewhat more material covering operations in southern France, but the majority of the book covers operations in northern Europe.
This time we get much more involved in the stories of the generals - the bickering between Eisenhower and Montgomery, Montgomery and Bradley, and so on.
Overall, the three books are a solid telling of US ground forces in Europe and Africa. The bibliographies in each volume provide much opportunity for further, more detailed, investigations.
