Notes/Review |
One of the first lessons learned in creative writing is that there are three basic kinds of conflict: man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. himself. This story has large portions of all three. Man vs. nature when Zamperini and the other survivors were adrift in a rubber raft in the vast ocean. Man vs. himself as he struggled to maintain sanity in that raft. Man vs. man when facing the depredations of life as a POW under the Japanese boot. The book runs the gamut of human emotion.
The only shortfall, and it is minor, is the lack of a bibliography. It is well end-noted, but I've come to appreciate a nice bibliography that might point me to other worthwhile books without having to dig through 50 pages of end notes.
Highly recommended. |
