Notes/Review |
I enjoyed this one more than I expected. It is not a scholarly work - has no index, notes, or bibliography. The author was, I believe, one of Stilwell's PR staff and although he was not with Stilwell for all the events described, was "in the loop".
After reading several books published during the war or immediately after (this one in 1946), I've come to expect a certain sort of language which ties the work to the time. This one is not jingoistic and avoids much of the vernacular of the day and as such holds up well.
The chapter on Stilwell's escape from Maymyo to India ahead of the Japanese is exciting and well told. The political landscape is covered in depth throughout and I felt the military aspects were clearly conveyed. |
