I really enjoyed this one, but that's probably due in no small part to my love of the area. So many of the places in Estes Park and RMNP are named after people and I only knew the stories of a few of them: Stephen Long, Albert Bierstadt, F.O. Stanley. Of those, only Stanley figures in the book. But there were so many other interesting stories of the early settlers - Rocky Mountain Jim; the Earl of Dunraven and his resident agent, Theodore Whyte; Alexander MacGregor; Griff Evans. Pickering tells us about the early Long's peak ascents and guides, about the toll roads and heiresses, about cattle ranching, hunting, farming, and fishing.
I'm looking forward to reading Pickering's follow-up. |
