----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the first book of the Masters of Rome series. I read the second book last year without realizing it was part of a series. I enjoyed it enough that I want to read the rest of the series. I was a bit concerned that reading them out of order would diminish my enjoyment, but it wasn't a big deal.

The plot seems to follow the history of the end of the Roman Republic fairly closely. As such, it has a cast of thousands, many of whom have similar names. I was reluctant to read Solzhenitsyn because of his many characters with many names of many syllables, but these books make him look like an amateur. Between name and title, it sometime seemed to take entire paragraphs to identify characters (e.g. Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio Nasica or Marcus Aemilius Scaurus Princeps Senatus).

I will definitely read the third book of the series, but not right away.
