Notes/Review
Middlebrook does a fantastic job here. The book is exceptionally well organized. Middlebrook weaves extended quotes from the survivors of all stripe throughout the book, A short history of strategic bombing thinking between the wars start us off, then we're introduced to the Allied bomber crews, organization, and planning. He succintly describes the German defensive systems and procedures and explains the political structure of Hamburg government and their civil defense preparations.

The chapters "Under the Bombs" and "Firestorm" are gripping, and vivid. But perhaps most incredible are the Survivors Stories at the end of the book. Extensively researched, Middlebrook even includes maps showing where each plane went down, where each of his storytellers were.
