Notes/Review
This is an excellent survey of the operations of the USMC during the Second World War. It is in the form of magazine articles, short excerpts from books, and letters from the front, each with a few paragraphs to introduce the author and place the story in the greater context of the war. Authors range from enlisted men and non-commissioned officers to generals, with a few combat correspondents thrown in for good measure.

The range of subjects is surprising. Obviously, we get the marine's view from the foxhole and landing craft. We also hear from marine aviators, doctors, and prisoners of war. We get a sense of the terror of wounded marines being shelled on the beaches while awaiting transport out of the combat zone and a taste of the boredom that is the vast majority of a combat marine's lot.

Includes index and photographs. There are no source notes and no bibliography, but the acknowledgments page provides some clues as to where to find many of the sources.
