Notes/Review |
I must say I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It's a pretty complete look at the United States in the 1920s: politics, economics, fashion, culture, business, and so on. Considering that it was published in 1931, it is much more accurate than I was expecting. Typically, good, thorough history takes time.
Given that the scope of the book is so great, and the time between the events and the writing so short, it would be reasonable to expect that some events would be described as important which, in the end, are not historically significant. But somehow Allen has managed to include almost all the significant events and exclude most of the dross. There are a few topics that were not covered at all, or only touched upon all too briefly (such as the state of race relations), but overall the author did a great job of picking his topics.
Includes a few photos and an index, but no notes or bibliography (which means, for me, that it falls a bit short of being a "scholarly work"). |
