Notes/Review |
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It's good, old-fashioned, hard sci-fi. Lots of interesting ideas here. Sometimes the characters aren't as strong as the "big ideas" the book is made of, but I find that to be fairly common in sci-fi.
Some people of an advanced civilization find an ancient archive. In working with it, they manage to spawn a deadly force. Something hidden escapes, along with the flotsam of the researchers. The survivors land on a primitive planet, inhabited by creatures that are only truly sentient in small packs. Meanwhile, the deadly force that was spawned wreaks havoc and we are introduced to a group of characters tasked with stopping it.
Once you get about a third of the way into this, it's not that hard to figure out how it's going to end. This is not really a criticism. If one were to raft a river from source to sea, you know how it's going to end at the sea. The thrill is the ride, and I found this one entertaining enough. |
