Notes/Review |
This was not at all what I expected. That is my fault, of course. The subtitle, "A Liberated Prisoner's Long March Home Through East Europe" conjured, for me, the story of the author literally marching thousands of miles through war-desolated and melancholy eastern Europe.
Yes, it takes him the better part of a year to get home, and he travels through eight countries, but it's not really a march. It's more like an extended convalescent vacation run by an often inept tour guide. Levi spends considerable time in displaced persons camps, although he never uses the term. Most of his time was in Russia, under the care (such as it was) of the Red Army.
I've read a lot of books written by war correspondents. This is very similar to those books. We get the stories of dozens of people the author encountered. This is not an epic odyssey (even though it is); it's little vignettes about people and places, schemes and dreams, and an insatiable hunger. |
