Notes/Review |
This is the story of one of the few German U-Boat commanders who managed to survive to the end of the war. The first third of the book struck me as a bit cliche. I've read a number of submarine stories, both fact and fiction, and nothing in the first third stood out to me as anything but ordinary in comparison. But it really gets going when the tide of war changes and the hunter becomes the hunted.
We get Werner's full story - his education as Ensign, service as an officer in the early years, his promotion to commander, the poignant stories of his trips home to visit family, and finally his capture and internment by the victorious Allies.
Well written and engaging, Werner's story had me captivated. Highly recommended. |
