-----------------------------------------------------
The first volume of a three volume set takes us from the birth of TR to the death of McKinley.
Most of the presidential whole-life biographies I've read start with the man's parents, or grand-parents, or even farther back. This one starts with a bit of foreshadowing - a short prologue chapter describing New Years Day 1907 - before starting right off with his birth. From privileged, sickly youth, curator of his own attic museum of stuffed birds, to cowboy and rancher, to civil service reformer and police commissioner, to governor and vice president and other interesting things in between. Roosevelt's life to this point reads a bit like the script of Little Big Man. You find yourself thinking "There's no way one person did all this". It's an incredible story, masterfully told. |
