In a note at the end, Martin tells us this book tells all the story for half the characters. He didn't want to end with "to be continued". The next book is the "whole story" for the characters we didn't follow in this one. But, of course, both books necessarily end with an implied "to be continued" as this part of the story includes neither beginning nor end.
I'm beginning to get a bit fatigued by this world, happy that I don't inhabit it. It is a stagnant, brutal place, violent and poor. Here, neither the printing press nor gunpowder has been invented. The people have lived without change for thousands of years, subjected to enough war and famine to keep the population more or less static. Almost no one can read, there is no medicine, even navigation is so primitive few boats are sailed out of the sight of land. And every indication is that this will be the state of this world for more centuries. |
