--------------------------------------------------------
John Wesley Powell stood only 5'6" tall but was a giant among men. This whole-life biography tells us not only about his famous exploration of the Colorado River but his struggles as head of the USGS in Washington, D.C. against the corrupt timber, mining, and cattle barons. It is well known that Powell was far ahead of his time when it comes to water use in the arid West. He was also ahead of the curve in dealing with the native inhabitants of the area.
Considering this book is relatively short, as Powell himself did, it covers quite a bit of ground.
The book includes an index and short bibliography but is, sadly, not noted.
"Science holds the answer." -- J. W. Powell |
