----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is some history of the Rocky Mountain region told in a different way - organized around the passes. It begins with the Conquistadors in 1540 and ends with a short chapter on highways; in between are the journeys of Lewis and Clark, Zebulon Pike, and Stephen Long; stories about Fremont and Bridger; the placer gold rush of 1859; the ascendance of railroads. It can be a bit challenging if you're not familiar with the terrain. One map is provided, which at first I thought was too complicated. In the end it proved quite useful.
It is a scholarly work, well noted and with a good index. There is also a nice appendix of passes (weighing in at nearly 80 pages). |
